Food First is always at the leading edge of thought and analysis on food and farming issues. Its a very exiting and nurturing place to be an intern, because you work on real issues, usually in cooperation with farmers and community activists, to provide research and analysis that people really use in their struggles for a more sustainable, just food system.
The Great!
- I've seen the results of this organization in... Their ability to define and re-focus the national and international debate on a number of issues while I was there. People are talking about Fair Trade certification, Food Sovereignty, and the perils of the Ethanol boom in a deeper and more realistic way after Food First's work on those issues.
- What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... Working on very exiting research projects with a great group of staff and interns.
- The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... Down to earth very very knowledgeable.
- If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... bring together a broad coalition of farmers and help facilitate their voice in moving towards better food systems.
Ways to make it better!
- In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... Funding. The staff has more important work to do and more great opportunities than they have time to do. They need real funding to hire another full time researcher.
MY ROLE: I was a Volunteer & Research and Writing on Fairtrade Certification and other issues
