A year and a half ago I was desperately in search of HELP! I had taken in 3 young relatives only to discover that each one had unique social/developmental issues, and together their issues were compounded as they bounced off each other. Trying to manage them was like trying to organize a sit down dinner on Noah's Ark.
Someone familiar with the chaos in our home gave me the contact number for this group. The MusicLink Foundation and the volunteer teachers who gave us lessons have worked a miracle in our lives!
Although the children are still a handfull they have developed a level of discipline I never thought I'd see as they compete to show off who can play more of their songs with the fewest errors. Truly music has "..soothed the savage breast." As an added bonus, learning to play an instrument has raised their standing among their classmates at school and given them more confidence in their ability to learn anything else.
And recently, when my own son's cello was broken (a loss I sadly could not afford to replace) they came through in the most unexpected and wonderful way for him.
Life isn't always fair, but people like this who give of their time and talents to help improve children's experience are a gift. I only hope that someday I will be in a position to contribute toward the continuation of their good works.

I joined the Silver Star Fmilies of America after my son, a US Marine, was wounded in Iraq. In addition to honoring and aiding those members of our military, wounded while serving in a war zone, they have provided moral support, friendship and understanding to me and my family. I have been honored to be able to help our troops in any small way that I can, whether it's raising money for banners to present the wounded, sending cards and letters to the troops and those hospitalized, or just offering a kind word and support to their families. The Silver Star Families of America has made it possible. They are a great and loving bunch, and I am proud to be one of them.

My family has been involved in Able Flight since its inception. It is a wonderful way for us to give back to the aviation community and make a difference in the lives of people who might otherwise not get a chance to enjoy the freedom of flight. Our company imports and sells aircraft with adaptive hand controls that allow people to pilot the aircraft without the use of their legs. We donate as much aircraft time and support as we can afford and it has enriched our lives tremendously. We’ve made new friends all across the country. And since any body involved in Able Flight (donor, sponsor, student, or volunteer) has demonstrated a love of aviation and the belief that it can change lives, they automatically qualify as an honorary Hansen and are considered part of our extended family.

As a flight instructor, I teach regulations, basic aerodynamics, weather and aeronautical decision making. Flight instructors also try to instill a sense of confidence and self reliance that is unique to aviators. That is at the heart of what Able Flight is all about. They believe becoming an aviator can breed confidence and inspire people with disabilities to do whatever they can dream. I’ve been a professional aviator for 22 years. I’ve instructed in the military and general aviation and can say that the volunteer flight and ground instructor hours I’ve performed for Able Flight have been the most rewarding of my career. There is nothing more satisfying than turning loose a solo student who once thought piloting an airplane was out of their reach because of a disability.

Working with Able Flight can present some unique challenges to flight instructors, but that means rewards are even greater. The sense of pride from working with the Wounded Warriors and the "Return to flight" students is hard to put into words. Any aviator can imagine the wonderful feeling you get when you help a fellow aviator or veteran who’s been dealt a tough hand, get to be pilot in command. There is nothing better than seeing the joy, confidence, and sense of accomplishment light up the face of an Able Flight student.

Another great aspect of Able Flight is how they encourage their new aviators to give back. When you see Sean O’Donnell start his own flight school, Jessica Scharle tutor new students or watch Brad Jones barnstorm a 1000 miles to meet and inspire others in wheelchairs, you realize Able Flight touches many more people than just their scholarship recipients.

In summary, you won’t find a more dedicated, hard working, and inspiring group of people than those at Able Flight. And if you’re lucky enough to be one of the flight instructors, it’s a whole lot of fun!!

My name is Brad Jones, I am a paraplegic, and I was awarded a scholarship through Ableflight. It provided me the most rewarding experience of my life by awrading me a flight training schlarship which yeilded me a sport pilot license. I'm currently a pilot and fly as often as I can. The organization gave me a renewed sense of self-confidence through my experince with them over the past 2 years. During this time I have had the privilege to fly and obtain my pilots license, I also participated in a barnstorming tour where we raised awarness of the organization. Ableflight contains a group of people that are truly dedicated to providing a community of people with disabilities with an opportunity of a life time with the gift of flight.

Able Flight is a tremendous organization that assists physically challeneged individuals to realize a life long dream to fly. I have wanted to fly for as long as I can remember (50+ years). Able Flight made that dream come true and gave me a new purpose and direction in life that will allow me to share the wonders of aviation with family and friends. As a recipient of the Challenege Scholarship I was able to experience flight training without the expense, which was truly important to someone on disability. Funds cannot be wasted. I now know that my dream since childhood will eventually be realized thanks to Able Flight. The Able Flight organization and personnel truly care about their purpose and scholarship awardees. I will be forever grateful to Able Flight for the opportunity they gave me. Even if I never fly again, Able Flight has changed my life in ways I guess that only pilots can relate too, and that I hope to share.

I became a paraplegic 24 years ago. I've lived my journey in an able bodied world and have always sought out to do things that enable me to be out of my chair. To feel the freedom that we all are looking for. Able Flight has allowed me to make a dream come true by becoming a pilot. My relationship with the organization has been one of the best encounters I have experienced in my life. They have allowed me to fulfill a dream of obtaining that freedom and also giving me the greatest challenge of my life. So many different levels of who I am have been involved with becoming a sports pilot and the support of all involved with Able Flight have been there to help me through each step. As a little girl I dreamed of being a Flight Attendant....BUT...being the PILOT is so much better!! I can't say THANK YOU enough for all that Able Flight has given to me through my experience!

This is a small but amazing organization that tasks itself with some of the most challenging tasks it can. In this way it leads its scholarship winners by not only saying, but showing by example, that if you put your mind to something, almost anything is achievable.

Currently I serve as an advisor on the board (no voting capacity) As one of the founding members of this group back in the mid-90's I am overjoyed by it's sustainability. I specifically choose to remove myself from the board & activities with it for a few years 2000-2004ish. My aim was to see what kind of ability the developing group had to withstand the challenges of surviving, on it's own. Truly an entity of it's own without my efforts, that the community as a whole was helping to shape and provide for its' existence.
It is so viable and has met my fledging attempts & desires of its' inception. I am thrilled to witness it's progress thru many challenges. I am honored by the efforts of those who serve, board, volunteers & paid staff. The executive director, Sara Gibbs is outstanding & performs her job well with the right mix of approachability & professionalism. The atmosphere is fun & inviting with a diversity of events that this community responds well to.
It is wonderful to see a non-profit succeed and stay on target with their mission.

Mission Learning Center is an amazing organization that has helped make a substantial impact on the San Francisco community. Since joining the Board of Directors, I have seen former students come back to discuss their experiences, crediting Mission Learning Center for instilling a lifelong dedication to reading that helped propel them to law school and other successful careers. The Mission Learning Center's ability to improve reading by 2 grade levels in less than a year is testament to MLC's powerful and proven techniques in working with students and parents to enhance education.

The Ronald McDonald House Charities of New Mexico is a great steward of the community trust. Serving as a resource to families in need, the organization provides refuge and security in the midst of uncertainty. While the organization can point to a successful expansion to 30 rooms, which were filled shortly after opening, the organization’s greatest strengths is found in the volunteers and community support. This goodwill from Albuquerque residents is poured out to people who travel to our city from around New Mexico for top medical care. During these difficult financial times, it is good to have a community resource like RMHC-NM available to families in need.

I got involved with Silver Star Families after one of my sons best buddies in the MANG was injured, and trying to navigate the complex VA system to get his rating. He wanted to continue serving, but couldn't do so until he got his rating.
After talking with him and hearing the hoops he had to jump through and continue to jump through, I wanted to make a difference.
I'm a vet myself, but served during the Cold War, I wanted to make a change and difference for the returning vets, especially the National Guard service member.
Especially since they are like the forgotten ones of the military.
In researching organizations, I came across Silver Star families, and read what they were all about, Honoring our Wounded. That was an organization I wanted to be involved with.
This organization truly cares about the wounded and trying to make changes for their benefit.
I am proud to be apart of this great organization.

I joined Silver Star Families of America looking for a place I felt comfortable at while working for and with our military and veterans. I was looking for a way to honor the thousands of wounded military members and veterans that suffer from visible and invisible wounds. There are many organizations that honor the visible wounds, but very few that honor the invisible ones. The invisible wounds are the ones that are dear to my heart as I watch my son and see what he experiences. SSFOA members do not allow any hero's sacrifice to go unnoticed, the members within the organization appreciate and show they care through the pride and effort they give in all the programs. It is very heart warming to come to any member and feel when they say they support the wounded, that it comes from deep within them and they will not harm the integrity of any of those that are wounded. I feel honored and privileged to work with the members of this organization, but to be able to present a banner that the wounded member richly deserves just thrills the soul to watch them with pride written all over their face while accepting it. The wounded warriors deserve to feel human and they deserve recognition. We cannot forget those injured in war, no matter what type of injury they suffer from and no matter what war it occurred in. The volunteers and the board members keep things organized and controlled while faithfully serving. And the cofounders of SSFOA did those injured a genuine service by starting this organization and anyone can tell, as they talk with them, that their hearts are completely in this effort. The wounded will not be forgotten with this organization moving forward continuously.
