I was a Volunteer & watched my daughter grow up in the organization and, whenever possible, tried to make The Mosaic Project known to the community and to support them financially

Through my daughter's work with The Mosaic Project, I have seen how it allows a person to find the best in themselves, to bring this to the community, and affect genuine and needed change. As a psychologist who has worked extensively with children, I appreciate the organization's ability to create a safe place for children to examine their beliefs, explore their hurts, and feel supported by a diverse community.

The Great!
  • If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... help millions to understand and appreciate differences, thereby living in far greater harmony.
Ways to make it better!
  • In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... to acquire broader financial and institutional support.
  • One thing I'd also say is that... we need The Mosaic Project in every community in this country!

The Mosaic Project is by far the most effective community working towards social justice that I have ever seen. Children are the ones who will grow up and affect how the world works. I often think about how Mosaic will affect the world, or even the bay area, twn years from now. When I imagine any situation that I am in, and how it plays out now, I compare it with how it would happen if even half of the people involved went to Mosaic when they were ten. It would change things immensely. Important tools are shown and made available in a way that is creative, not preachy. Reaching children at this age, when small seeds of peace can be planted in their lifeskills garden, is infinitely important. Mosaic does it beautifully.

The Great!
  • What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... learning and growing all together as a community. Above all, Mosaic creates community and keeps it healthy through each session of campers. Staff and cabin leaders our their best to embody the kind of community we want to see, and there is much to be gained just from being there and being in it.
  • If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... literally make peace more possible.
Ways to make it better!
  • My experience would have been better if... I could be at Mosaic all the time!
  • If I ran this organization, I would... hopefully have learned a great deal from those who run it. They are incredible.
  • In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... NOT ENOUGH FUNDING!

I was a Volunteer & I spent a week mentoring elementary school students, brought together from incredibly diverse backgrounds, at The Mosaic Project's residential outdoor school in Napa.

The Mosaic Project is undoubtedly the most inspiring community I have ever been a part of. I first became involved as a high school youth leader about five years ago, and I haven't been able to stay away since. The Youth Leadership Project provided me with the incredibly unique experience of living and working within a community that was more diverse, supportive, and open than any I had ever seen in high school or in the world around me. That experience continues to remind me that a different kind of world IS possible - one in which people from every walk of life can work together authentically and respectfully. Not only did my first experience with The Mosaic Project inspire the 4th and 5th graders that I was mentoring, it was one of the most formative moments in my life.

The Great!
  • I've seen the results of this organization in... the 4th and 5th grade students I worked with telling me that they are "ready to create a world filled with more peace."
  • What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... the leadership skills I have gained from working with young students and from older mentors in the organization.
  • The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... incredibly diverse, representing the diversity of the students at the outdoor school, and extremely supportive, caring, and inspiring.
  • If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... reach EVERY 4th or 5th grade student across the country with its crucial tools for creating a more respectful and peaceful world.
Ways to make it better!
  • My experience would have been better if... I had discovered this inspiring community as an elementary school student and been able to participate in the outdoor school when I was 9 years old. I would be a different person today had I had that valuable opportunity of learning effective tools to resolve conflicts, understanding how interconnected the entire world is, and ways to work against stereotyping, prejudice and discrimination at a much younger age.
  • If I ran this organization, I would... find a way to integrate The Mosaic Project's curriculum into every elementary, middle, and high school.
  • In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... the lack of funding.
  • One thing I'd also say is that... I don't think my life would be nearly as full and rich if I had not participated as a Youth Leader with The Mosaic Project over five years ago.

I am a teacher that brought my 4th grade students to the Mosaic Project camp in Napa and was blown away by how together the program is. After five days and four nights at Mosaic, my kids came home singing songs like "Fighting is not the solution..." and "We can live in equality, embracing our diversity...." They seemed to have really taken in lessons from games and activities they did on topics like prejudice & stereotyping, conflict resolution, assertiveness, and what it means to be an ally. Not only did the students have a great time, it seems to have made a significant impact on the atmosphere at our school. I would recommend this experience to any teacher and wish all elementary school students could attend Mosaic.

The Great!
  • I've seen the results of this organization in... the positive behavior of my students.
  • What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... the quality and integrity of the staff facilitators and the high school students who work as cabin leaders.
  • The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... kind, committed, and knew a lot about how to make kids feel comfortable in what, for many, was their first sleep-away camp experience.
  • If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... purchase its own camp site nearer to the Bay Area.
Ways to make it better!
  • My experience would have been better if... the camp site was closer to Oakland so we wouldn't have had to drive the students so far.
  • If I ran this organization, I would... figure out how to get every 4th or 5th grade student in the Bay Area to attend one week at Mosaic Camp.
  • In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... financial.
  • One thing I'd also say is that... not only do the elementary school students receive a great experience, but the high school students who come from all over the Bay Area get great leadership skills. My 16 year-old daughter is going to look into Mosaic as an internship next year.
