TechSoup Global

TechSoup Global

(San Francisco, CA)

Founded in 1987 as CompuMentor, San Francisco-based TechSoup Global (www.techsoupglobal.org) is working towards a day when every social benefit organization on the planet has the access to resources they need to fulfill their mission.

TechSoup provides technology information to individuals and organizations in more than 190 countries, has provided consulting services in more than 50 countries and, through its global network of capacity-building NGOs, manages product donations to more than 80,000 organizations in 22 countries. The product donations program has enabled organizations to save over $1.2 billion in expenses as of September 2008. TechSoup Global continues to innovate with a goal of bringing increased resources and capacity to organizations working diligently on their social missions. TechSoup Global employs a staff of 170 and deploys a budget of US $22 million.

TechSoup Stock offers donations of the latest software and refurbished Green hardware for as little as 5% of retail cost.  To qualify, organizations must be a 501(c)3.

TechSoup’s Learning Center offers free articles, community forums, blogs and “webinars” on finding the right desktops, networks, routers, WiFi connections, financial management, website management and security programs.  We provide information on accessible tech for disabled users and tips for community technology centers, discuss the latest tools for technology budgeting, volunteer training and fundraising through grants, on-line donations, and social networking.

TechSoup’s Refurbished Computer Initiative gives nonprofits a chance to get high-quality refurbished computers formerly used by large corporations (typically phased out after two to three years of use and in very good condition). RCI computers are loaded with a new operating system and covered by a 90-day warranty. Keeping just two computers and monitors out of the waste stream yields a carbon offset equal to taking a car off the road for a year (according to the U.S Environmental Protection Agency).

TechSoup Global serves the NGO sectors 22 countries including the United Kingdom, Spain, Belgium, Poland, South Africa, Australia, Ireland, Hungary, India, Taiwan, Germany, and Mexico. The partner network is expected to expand to 75 countries by 2010.

TechSoup’s MaintainIT library project works with libraries throughout the U.S. and Canada, sharing stories on how best to support public computers, publishing tips and techniques in “Cookbooks” and other articles.

TechSoup’s NetSquared initiative spurs responsible adoption of new social web tools—blogs, wikis, RSS feeds, podcasting—to collaborate, share information and mobilize support. NetSquared.org offers a monthly “Net Tuesday” and an annual NetSquared Conference in San Jose, California which brings together innovators in social benefit initiatives, business models, funding for philanthropic initiatives, software development, and technology.
