I have been working with Reading Partners for a full year. I have found them to be extremely dedicated people. They have good resources and very good people.

The Great!
  • I've seen the results of this organization in... the improvement of the reading skills of the children who are in the program.
  • What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... working with the child all school year.
  • The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... extroadinarily concerned about the children's welfare as well as their reading levels.
  • If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... it would be able to hire more staff and spread out to many more schools.
Ways to make it better!
  • My experience would have been better if... I could have spent more time in the program.
  • If I ran this organization, I would... continue the good work that it is performing.
  • In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... finding more volunteers.
  • One thing I'd also say is that... it has been an enjoyable experience for me.

Reading Partners provides a very thorough training for those that believe reading is a must to a successful life. I firmly believe that this organization will reach many children that would otherwise be left far behind. With the school funding not being able to provide anything extra, this program gives schools anotoher option to service their students. Everyone at Reading Partners has been positive and definitely have a passion for this very important need. I have had a wonderful experience so far with this organization.

The Great!
  • I've seen the results of this organization in... student improvement in reading grade.
  • What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... being able to interact with children and seeing their faces when things click.
  • The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... All have been helpful, friendly and positive.
  • If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... expand their sites throughout the country and help many children. I feel reading enables anyone to accomplish many things in life and in particular will help these children in other subjects as well.
Ways to make it better!
  • My experience would have been better if... I personally could volunteer more time.
  • If I ran this organization, I would... change nothing.
  • In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... funding.
  • One thing I'd also say is that... nothing.

I've been a tutor at Reading Partners for 3 years and have had nothing but great experiences. The program is well organized and has a curriculum that makes me feel like I'm making a difference each time I tutor. Space in the program is limited so kids who participate are there because they really want to learn. And the staff is organized and helpful. I highly recommend this program.

The Great!
  • I've seen the results of this organization in... the improvement in each student's reading skills.
  • What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... the students they serve.
  • The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... organized and helpful.
  • If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... help even more students.
Ways to make it better!
  • In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... how hard it is to spend only 1-2 hours a week with each student and get the rate of progress that we all want. In many cases there aren't people in the students' homes who can help them with reading. So those couple hours with a tutor may be the only 1:1 help they get each week which isn't a lot.

I completed 1 school year as a tutor with YES Reading, now known as Reading Partners and have found it a very well run, supportive program bringing value to both students and their teachers. I have "re-enlisted" to continue working with 2 students/week for this coming school year. The particular staff I had the privilege to be in contact with bent over backwards to make sure that I had all the training and materials necessary to assist my students.

The Great!
  • I've seen the results of this organization in... The improvement in reading skills for both of the students I worked with was an inspiration.
  • What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... This program is designed in such a way that the students want to participate in it - they feel lucky to have been selected to have a tutor all to themselves. They come willingly so are fun to work with.
  • The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... All staff have been very professional and caring people.
  • If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... I'm not privy to this aspect of their organization.
Ways to make it better!
  • My experience would have been better if... It was fine, as is.
  • If I ran this organization, I would... I would allow more interaction between tutors and students, outside of the tutoring room. There are very strict boundaries which I feel are unnecessarily inhibiting.
  • In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... I think that if there were more volunteer tutors willing to give their time, that Reading Partners could provide more students with this valuable one-on-one support.

Turtoring one on one with a struggling school child brings such joy into my life! As I work together with the child, I love to watch eyes sparkle, smiles spread across the face as we work together to learn to love reading. I view my role as not only to teach the mechanics but also the joy of reading as new worlds open up through books. Part of my role, I believe, is to be a cheerleader and talk about college to encourage high expectations. And, of course, together we develop a friendship as we joke together and share stories. One girl told me she loved Fridays because that was the day we read together. This made my heart sing! And that is why Reading Partners not only helps the child, but also the school and all of society as we help children succeed. It is the best thing I have ever done, other than raising my own children. Judie Fernandez, Menlo Park, CA tutor at Castro School, Mt. View, CA
