Mission
To empower youth to make successful transitions to independence in adulthood, through an innovative program that integrates employment in social enterprises and job skills training, financial literacy & asset building, college exposure, and career exploration services.
Key Facts
Geographic areas served:
San Francisco, Oakland, San Diego and Washington DC
Target demographics:
Juma Ventures serves disadvantaged young people between the ages of 15 and 19, the vast majority of whom live in Bayview/Hunter’s Point, Visitacion Valley, Western Addition and the Mission. All participants are “low- income” according to the Housing and Urban Development’s Area Median Income table, and three-quarters live in households earning less than 200% of the Federal Poverty Guideline. Our participant population is ethnically diverse, with close to 90% being youth of color.
Results to date:
In 2007, 96% of Juma’s graduates transitioned to two- and four-year colleges, while 4% went on to jobs.
• Our 2006 Social Impact Report revealed that 97% of our participants are either still working and/or enrolled in academic or vocational training programs two years after transitioning out of Juma.
• In 2008, Juma took its first step in The Field of Dreams Initiative, our nationwide replication plan, and expanded our social enterprise business to Nationals Stadium in Washington, D.C.
• Today, Juma operates the leading youth Individual Development Account (IDA) program in the U.S., with 550 accounts opened and more than $500,000 saved by program participants.
This year, we will launch a new statewide initiative to replicate our asset-building program in California with the support of Merrill Lynch, Levi Strauss, and the Walter & Elise Haas Sr. Fund.
Direct beneficiaries per year: 400 youth between the ages of 15 - 19 years. Juma's youth are recruited through schools and community programs in San Francisco, Oakland, San Diego and Washington D.C.'s most impoverished neighborhoods.
