Mission
Engage workplace adults in structured activities that make a life-changing difference for youth living in economically and educationally disadvantaged neighborhoods
Key Facts
Geographic areas served:
Chicago region
Target demographics:
Cabrini Conenctions serves 7th to 12th grade youth in the Cabrini Green area of Chicago. The Tutor/Mentor Connection serves more than 300 tutor/mentor programs serving k-12 youth in the Chciago region
Results to date:
Cabrini Connections: More than 500 teens and 600 volunteers have participated for 1-7 years since 1993. 38% of teens have participate 3-7 years.
Tutor/Mentor Connection: we’ve created a master database of Chicago tutor/mentor programs, a web based library, a year-round marketing plan, and events that build public awareness, provide networking and training, and draw volunteers and donors directly to different programs in different neighborhoods.
Direct beneficiaries per year: 75 teens in our Cabrini Connections program; more than 300 different tutor/mentor programs in Chicago
Indirect beneficiaries per year: More than 60,000 visitors to our web sites
Obstacles:
Too few people are personally connected to issues of inner city poverty, and too few leaders have a plan to build these connections and sustain them for many years. Thus, the terms tutoring and mentoring mean different things to different people and there are too few programs operating in most of the places where these programs are needed.
