I have been in the Emerging Leaders Program for around 2 years. It is a very helpful program that I enjoy coming to. The Emerging Leaders Program gave me enough knowledge and help to optain my first job. The staff of the emerging leaders program are extremely kind, helpful, and thoughtful. Throughout the year w

The Great!
  • What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... having the chance to make new friends from other schools and having the oppurtunity to meet with them every week and together as a group prepare for our futures.
Ways to make it better!
  • If I ran this organization, I would... I would look into possibly providing the Emering Leaders Program for other students in other states or even other cities in Pennsylvania so that other students could benefit from this program.

I recently just joined the Emerging Leaders Program here at the Human Service Center Corporation. I am looking forward to being a part of this program so that I can better prepare myself for when I get out of high school. I am really looking forward to learning how to prepare for my future and any future jobs that I might get. My brother has been in the program for several years now and really likes it. It was because of him that I had decided to join. Everyone that I have met here has been really great to me and helpful. I am looking forward to being a part of the Emerging Leaders.

The Great!
  • The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... very kind and willing to help out. They really care about all the people that they serve here at the human service center.
Ways to make it better!
  • If I ran this organization, I would... possibly consider spreading the Emerging Leaders Program to other states or even other cities in the Pittsburgh area so that other students could benefit from the program as well.

I am currently a member of the emerging learders program (ELP), which is a great oppurtunity for me to find help with job experience and getting ready for my career outside of high school. I believe that the human services center has a positive effect on our community because they really care about all the people that they service. The Emerging Leaders Program has provided many opportunities for me to job shadow, go on different field trips to area colleges, and to listen to guest speakers from other organizations in the community.

The Great!
  • The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... Very friendly and kind. they care a lot about the students here.
Ways to make it better!
  • If I ran this organization, I would... consider expanding the Emerging Leaders Program to other states so that other kids could benefit from it.

The Human Services Center has help throughout the years by keeping me out of trouble, and helping me prepare for my future. It also has provided a variety of activities for people to be involved in such as field trips, afterschool activities, and guest speakers. I am in a program at the center called ELP(Emerging Leaders Program). This program helps me learn more about math, reading, and all sorts of things that will help in the future of my life. This is the reason in my opinion I think HSCC is a great place.

I joined the Emerging Leaders Program when I was in the ninth grade. It was everything that I had expected and then some. We have gone on a lot of field trips to different colleges and trade schools that were very informative and helpful. Also we have had alot of guest speakers from all over the community that have been very interesting. I have learned a ton of different things like how to write a resume, interviewing techniques and even ideas on how to run your own business. I wish I could have joined earlier. This experience with Emerging Leaders Program has really made me a better individual and student.

The Great!
  • The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... very helpful and kind. They really care about all of the students and want to see us do well.
Ways to make it better!
  • If I ran this organization, I would... maybe plan more field trips in the future

The Emergling Leaders Program at the HSCC found me through McKeesport Area High School. I knew absolutly nothing about this program so i decided to fill the application out and visit the building to learn what this program was all about. Once entering the interview and finding out that this program helps youth with getting a part time job whether it be a Counsler in Training(C.I.T.) or obtaining a job within your community. They also help you with how to WOW the employer that is interviewing for the job and how to write the "perfect" resume. I have been a participate of the Emerging Leaders Program(ELP) for two years now and its definatly worth my while. We have visited Washington, DC and have had speakers all over our community come in and talk to us about different opporunites that we have. ELP also helps you prepare yourself for college with applications to landing your interview.

The Human Services Center is a great place to learn new things and have a good exprience here. I am currently and Counselor in Training for the after-school program helping children with homework and doing activities with them and in Emerging Leaders Program where I learn about careers and college. Overall, this is a great place to check out.

I met Dave Coplan through a networking recommendation from Jennifer Ross at PANO and eventually wound-up doing contract work for HSCC. Dave understands that for a nonprofit to achieve excellence, you need to strategically and relentlessly advocate for the people you serve. I am impressed by HSCC's ability to diversify and expand their fundraising, develop a dedicated staff and harness the power of an engaged Board. But most of all, I'm impressed by the work that HSCC is doing with Mon Valley's youth. As someone with an extensive background in youth programming, the Emerging Leaders Program is simply among the best that I've seen, HSCC recognizes that their work isn't just about addressing the needs of the people they serve, but also about enabling them to envision and achieve a better life.

The Great!
  • I've seen the results of this organization in... its complete approach to addressing the needs of the community. They recognize that it's not just community patch-work, but the empowerment of a community as well
  • What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... learning from exemplary service and leadership. Any aspiring nonprofit leader would do well to learn from the work that Dave Coplan is doing in the Mon Valley
  • The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... driven by a clarity of roles and mission. In the field of Human Services where the burn-out quotient can be high, the staff and volunteers remain focused and determined to do excellent work.
  • If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... do its part to dispel the notion that we can't eradicate the cycles of poverty in our communities
Ways to make it better!
  • In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... funding due to Human Services annually facing cuts at both the federal and state levels
  • One thing I'd also say is that... If you want someone to tell it to you straight, try Dave.

I joined the HSCC board as an intern after being wowed by Dave Coplan's charisma & presentation during a "speed boarding" session. My board orientation was the most thorough orientation I've ever received... ever (including new student orientation, new job orientation, welcome to the resort orientation, here’s your retirement package orientation)! Dave & Alicia consistently made themselves available for questions, and were generous with their praise and direction for board service. HSCC excels at sharing their stories of success and positive impact on the communities of the Mon Valley.

The Great!
  • I've seen the results of this organization in... the newspaper!
  • What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... the transparency of the management and leadership.
  • The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... superstars!

I am a first year board member for Human Services Center Corp. Having represented various companies (public and private) and been involved with several other organizations (non profit and for profit), I can honestly say that I have not seen an organization run as efficiently or effectively as HSCC. The informative and transparent nature of the management is a delight for a board member; the focus and passion of the organization is an asset to its constituents. I am proud to be associated with HSCC.

The Great!
  • What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... the focused manner in which it seeks to accomplish its mission.
Ways to make it better!
  • In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... resources. We clearly need more financial and other resources to help organizations like this one.

The Great!

I have had the opportunity to work with the staff of HSCC on a variety of different occasions. One of my favorite examples is when they readily agreed to connect with a local company to provide their employees with a way to give back and help others. The HSCC staff was ready to accept their help, bring resources to youth and families that truly needed it, and to make the holiday brighter for both groups!

My first professional work experience was an internship with the Human Services Center Corporation. Perhaps the most valuable lesson learned is the importance of the planning process. Thinking through goals and objectives to solve problems and reach goals, then developing leadership skills to implement the plan, are useful tools no matter where life takes you. The Human Services Center is a unique organization that serves many people successfully due to excellent administrative leadership. I’m grateful for my experience there.

The Great!
