I was a General Member of the Public & I helped two young people gain apprenticeships with the Food Bank.

As a past recruiter of nonprofit internships, I worked with several staff members at the Food Bank in developing position descriptions, outlining expectations and maintaining our partnership. Not only were these staff members some of the most professional and hard-working individuals I have met, but they all shared a deep passion for their mission. Furthermore, the young people we placed at the Food Bank were generously supported throughout their experience. In my opinion, the GPCFB is one of the most effective non-profits in our region.

Ways to make it better!

I met with Anne Hawkins, the Chief Development Director and Maureen Joyce, the Development Web Administrator to get their profile up here on the GNP website. The first thing that struck me was the size of the building. It shouldn't have been surprising, considering the large volume of goods they handle. Through the meeting, I was impressed with the degree of information they had memorized about the organization and its metrics. The level of professionalism, quality and expertise I saw at this organization was very high.
The Great!

- The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... highly capable, technologically savvy and dedicated.
Ways to make it better!
- My experience would have been better if... I would have had time to tour the warehouse
- In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... navigating a corporate climate that is donating way fewer items than before.
I was a Volunteer & Their Advocacy Research Public Ally for the 2007/2008 year.

The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank is one of the most impressively run organizations that I have had experience with. They have a commitment to providing a necissary service to those in need of food assistance in Southwestern Pennsylvania and is striving to help meet the goal set by the State of Pennsylvania to erraticate hunger or "cronic undernurishment" by 2020 by expanding their service and operating at efficiency.
The Great!
- I've seen the results of this organization in... new programs and efforts to retrieve food from being unclaimed. Programs such as gleaning, Produce to People farm stands are really excellent at taking nutritious food that would otherwise go uneaten for various reasons and bring them to those who are having difficulty finding the means to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables.
- What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... the warm down to earth environment.
- The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... amazing. Everyone is kind and enthusiastic and committed to the mission.
- If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... provide $50 million dollars worth of food and services. But I would also say that it could easily expand infrastructure to support a larger food distribution network, which would mean trucks, new food assistance agencies, and more food to stock those agencies to give out to the people that are hungry.
Ways to make it better!
- In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... Declining food donations. Increased food prices. Decrease in state funding.
I was a Volunteer & I am working on the GPCFB's Farm Stand Project as a Bill Emerson National Hunger Fellow.

The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank is an exceptionally run organization. The staff are helpful, friendly, and extremely dedicated to their work, and it is by far one of the most efficiently run food banks I have ever visited. In addition to their warehousing and distribution work, they has several innovative and effective nutrition education and urban agriculture programs. I'm involved with their Farm Stand Project, which brings fresh local produce into low-income communities otherwise lacking access. Going beyond traditional food distribution, the farm stands are one example of the commitment the GPCFB has made to promoting community food security, public health, and a sustainable food system.
The Great!
- I've seen the results of this organization in... the clients they serve, the reputation they have gained within the anti-hunger / food security movement.
- What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... working with a food bank that sees the importance of both direct service and policy advocacy in the fight against hunger.
- The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... Enthusiastic, dedicated, and helpful.
- If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... feed a lot of hungry people!
Ways to make it better!
- In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... 1. Balancing the need to distribute as much food as possible with the importance of that food being nutritious. 2. The decline in food donations coming from corporate donors.
