EFF fights to protect your civil liberties online and in the digital world in ways the average Joe hasn't thought of yet. They are remarkably effective, especially considering they operate with a skeleton crew of about 30 staffers; and considering a huge chunk of their time and money goes into litigation, extremely well-managed to boot.

The Great!
  • I've seen the results of this organization in... newspapers across the country.
  • What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... knowing I'm helping to protect civil liberties.
  • The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... helpful and knowledgeable.
  • If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... take on more cutting-edge issues!
Ways to make it better!
  • In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... that they don't get to take on as many important cases as they'd like.
  • One thing I'd also say is that... they've been around since 1990 and they're just getting started.

The folks at the EFF are extremely hard working and what they are working on is vitally important to our civil liberties. They may not get nearly as much press as some of the other non-profits but their work touches our daily lives in a very positive way.

The Great!
  • I've seen the results of this organization in... the defense of my civil liberties.
  • What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... the extremely friendly people all working for a great cause.
  • The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... all of them: lawyers, membership people, activists, technologists, and everyone inbetween.
  • If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... hire more lawyers, probably!
Ways to make it better!
  • My experience would have been better if... they had extended office hours enabling me to do more volunteer work after I got a regular 9-5 job.
  • If I ran this organization, I would... give it back to the people who ran it before I did.
  • In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... the money and power behind the big corporations.
  • One thing I'd also say is that... nothing else to say here!

The Electronic Frontier is the most important advocate in one of the incredibly important but underappreciated causes of today. They fight to ensure our increasingly digital future takes a form most beneficial to society's interests. These decisions are made today primarily in a corporate or government environment, and without the public's attention they can lead us to a state where expressive freedom, privacy, and innovation occur only on their terms. These problems seem remote to most people, but everyone is involved in the digital economy whether or not they are avid internet users. Governments and businesses keep electronic records on everything they are legally allowed to about consumers (and as the NSA wiretapping debacle shows, even beyond the limits of the law and the constitution). EFF pays attention and picks timely issues to fight through litigation and public awareness campaigning. I spent a summer there working as a legal intern, and saw firsthand the foresight and consideration that go into their strategies. EFF's positions are not radical; in fact, their aim is to find the policy that benefits ALL interested parties in the long run, placing our nation's collective interest first. They have led the fight against unconstitutional warrantless wiretapping; they resist attempts by copyright and patentholders to strangle innovation and solidify their monopolies regardless of the cost to expression and innovation; they protect our collective security by defending security researchers again companies trying to hide technological vulnerabilities from the public (while malicious users continue to exploit them); the examples go on, spanning the ever-growing points of contact between technology and our rights as citizens, as authors and inventors, as consumers, and as human beings. Read about their activities at eff.org, and please support this group that defends the rights we are only beginning to discover in this new age (and which future generations will need and appreciate even more). Thanks!

The Great!
  • I've seen the results of this organization in... my ability to use a free Internet everyday, use email and store information online knowing that people are fighting to ensure rigorous standards of privacy apply, and in hoping that one day I can enjoy the control over my identity (which is the essence of privacy) that previous generations took for granted.
  • What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... the brilliant minds that work here always being engaged in rational, forward-thinking discussion about what values to protect in any given situation and how to best accomplish that in the real world.
  • The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... diverse in intellectual outlook, expertise and perspective, but all open-minded and hard working.
  • If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... Make important issues more visible to the general public and pursue more legal cases with the potential to positively influence our laws.
Ways to make it better!
  • My experience would have been better if... --being completely honest: it couldn't have been better.
  • If I ran this organization, I would... continue on their path, which is guided by the collective wisdom borne of endless discussion among the diverse community of EFF, its friends and its members.
  • In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... getting the public to appreciate the relevance of issues which facially appear technical, and also framing these issues effectively in a long-term picture, so people understand the ultimate ramifications of problems that may be in their nascent stages.
  • One thing I'd also say is that... support the EFF!
