Being 21, I felt that breast cancer was an issue for older women and that it really had no relation to me. However, working with this organization has proved me wrong. It really does matter and breast cancer can occur to anyone at any age, and it's unfair. Therefore, the only way to fight it is in its prevention, by taking precautionary steps to assure that the unfairness does not happen to us or to those loved ones around us. I love being able to help women understand this new found knowledge that I have just gained and hope they can spread it to their loved ones.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

having the women tell us that they appreciate what we're doing and having them come back year after year. They're pleased that we're here for them and we're happy that we are able to also.

Even since ABHOP started, I was involved one way or another. I served on the Advisory Council Committee for several years. I am a breast cancer survivor, and I started the Dallas Chinese Women Breast Cancer Support Group in 2001. ABHOP has been very supportive to our group, invited us to the different events. Our group members also volunteered to help out at ABHOP events. When we have group gathering, ABHOP staff always made their best efforts to attend, and bring us educational materials to share or some donated gifts to lighten up our spirit. ABHOP has done so much in the past years to reach out to different Asian communities. So many women have benefited from this program. We have seen Asian women now are willing to come out and do the exams. Breast cancer survivors are no longer hiding in the houses, and are willing to step out and share our stories with others, so they know the importance of breast self-exam and mammogram. ABHOP has achieved so much, and it's an honor to be part of it. I am looking forward to more prosperous years to come with ABHOP.

The Asian Breast Health Outreach Project is a wonderful program that reaches out to every opportunity available to inform the lower class Asian minorities, 40 years and older, about their breast health and prevention by giving free mammograms with the grants from Susan G. Komen. Before I became a volunteer in this life saving(if i could say) project, my mother was and is a returning a patient. She gets her free mammogram every year and fortunately have not been diagnosed with breast cancer. During this time, I was very thankful to have such people out there worrying about my mother's health other than my family and I. Although, with little knowledge of breast cancer myself, I knew the cost of a mammogram, especially when uninsured. After a friend asked me if I wanted to volunteer for the Asian Breast Health Outreach Project, I had no hesitation and no second thoughts. I was sure I wanted to be a volunteer and part of the team that kept my mom healthy, making the years of having my mother by my side extended. Becoming a volunteer was the best way I could show my deep appreciation. I send my greatest gratitude and admiration to Kathie, Doris, and Frances, the ones that only get paid part time hours to perform this never ending caring job. They all put out their heart and time to help today's women healthier than ever.

I feel that what we do as volunteers is highly important when the statistics come in at the end of every year of how many women we gave mammogram to was diagnosed and saved them before it was too late.
