Asian Americans for Community Involvement (AACI) helps so many families in Silicon Valley. Over 30% of the population in Santa Clara County is Asian Pacific American, and AACI is the largest community-based organization focused on serving that population. They have programs that help at-risk youth, victims of domestic violence abuse, survivors of torture, low-income seniors, and families who need mental health counseling. AACI's shelter for victims of domestic violence serves a huge need in our community. Many of their clients do not speak English, which makes leaving abusive relationships even harder. The majority of these women are extremely low-income, surviving on less than $9,000 a year. Luckily, AACI has a comprehensive program to serve these women and their children. Their staff speaks 14 languages and include people who serve as family advocates and legal advocates. Given the wide range of languages and cultural backgrounds of AACI's staff, they are able to help women and children receive food, clothing, a safe place to stay, and a host of free and confidential services. Our community is a better place because of the dedication of AACI's staff.

The Great!
  • I've seen the results of this organization in... the stories of clients whose lives has been transformed for the better because of AACI's staff. I've heard former clients in tears over how the AACI youth program helped save them from the life of gang involvement their siblings had fallen into, and given them a future that included college and a career.
Ways to make it better!
  • In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... the perceptions that all Asian Americans are overachievers and do not need any help. Although the needs of the Asian American community may not make it into the media very often, an incredible range of needs do exist.

Asian Americans for Community Involvement (AACI) excels at providing critical services for people who might have nowhere else to turn. For example, AACI runs the only community health clinic in Silicon Valley focused on serving the low-income Asian community, providing affordable health care to uninsured patients. AACI also runs a Center for Survivors of Torture, which helps torture survivors from all around the world start a new life in the U.S. AACI literally saves lives-- by providing health care, safe shelter for domestic violence victims, counseling, etc.

The Great!
  • I've seen the results of this organization in... the culturally appropriate services that low-income clients have received.
  • What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... their willingness to partner with other nonprofits to avoid duplication of work and improve lives of County residents.
  • The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... dedicated, sensitive, sincere, and committed!
  • If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... make health care and social services even more accessible to those most in need.
Ways to make it better!
  • My experience would have been better if... they had even more resources for my clients.
  • If I ran this organization, I would... continue to outreach to more supporters to expand our services.
  • In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... fundraising, especially unrestricted dollars.
  • One thing I'd also say is that... AACI has been a tireless and leading advocate for the Asian community - trailblazers and a much needed service in our incredibly diverse community.

I first became aware of the good work of AACI more than 20 years ago, when I worked for the County of Santa Clara. AACI had an excellent reputation as a top-notch provider of mental health services and advocacy for civil rights. I was very pleased many years later to work for the organization as an employee. I found the staff to be highly committed and the Board and Executive team visionary.

The Great!
  • What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... The great people
  • The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... Representative of a diverse background, yet they shared a common commitment to serve the community.
  • If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... Double its efforts!! (it's annual budget is about 10m) I'd set a a priority capital improvements, specifically the purchase of an other facility for the domestic violence shelter.
Ways to make it better!
  • In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... The financial constraints of a collapsing economy, and more specifically the need to grow an individual donor base.

Asian Americans for Community Involvement does heroic work in the community-- providing mental health services, safety for women and kids who are victims of domestic violence, a senior center, HIV/AIDS testing, after-school youth programs, and the list goes on. The staff are incredible-- working long hours in order to serve the community and speaking multiple languages.

The Great!
  • I've seen the results of this organization in... the smiling Asian seniors at AACI's senior appreciation luncheon every year.
  • What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... Meeting dedicated board members and staff who believe in the mission of the organization-- helping improve the health and well-being of local community members.
  • The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... enthusiastic, diverse, and talented.
  • If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... invest in more facilities in Silicon Valley where it could provide services.
Ways to make it better!
  • My experience would have been better if... I got more direct interaction with people served by AACI.
  • If I ran this organization, I would... expand programs to serve more people.
  • In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... - getting the word out about all the great things AACI does. - making sure there is enough money to support the staff and all the programs.
  • One thing I'd also say is that... AACI is a special organization that serves not only Asians, but everyone in our community. Check them out!

  • What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... how crucial a social service agency like AACI is in the community
  • The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... Friendly and helpful
  • If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... Really create greater equity and really make the region a place to live!
Ways to make it better!
  • My experience would have been better if... There were more resources dedicated to additional staff.
  • If I ran this organization, I would... Seek additional funding for additional programs
  • In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... Budgetary constraints
